Sid Carr was a 1986 graduate of Livingston Academy. From an early age, he loved drawing and creating artwork and after high school he attended the Nossi College of Art in Nashville and graduated from there in 1990. Sid returned to Livingston and owned and operated Upper Cumberland Sign Services until his untimely death in 2022. Sid’s signs and artwork can be found all around Overton and surrounding counties. Many of you may remember his artwork that adorned the old Video Store, which was located where Walgreens/Subway is today.
Sid was an active member of the Livingston Jaycees. He held several offices in the Jaycees organization and was president seven times. He was one of five lifetime members of the Livingston Jaycees and Sid was always willing to help with the Jaycees’ community projects such as Christmas for Kids. Sid was a lifetime Democrat and served on the board for the Overton County Democratic Party and volunteered his time for many years to work at the polls on election day. Sid was very active in the Overton County 4-H program, winning both the State Poultry Judging and the State Land Judging contests while a high school student, and training numerous State-winning Poultry Judging teams as an adult volunteer.
Sid was also very involved with Livingston Academy sporting events. He began covering LA sports when he started writing for the school newspaper, “The Wildcat”, in high school. This led to Sid being the public address announcer at games. In 1992, Sid began his association with Telescripps cable filming games and in 1994 he started working at WLIV radio, broadcasting football and basketball games. In 1998, Sid returned to cable television and was the play-by-play announcer for Comcast cable until 2022. Sid rarely, if ever, missed an LA football or basketball game for over 30 years. Sid also put his artistic abilities to work on many different LA football and basketball drawings over the years, some of which are currently on display at R and M Family Pharmacy. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment related to Livingston Academy sports was his painstaking research to compile pictures and season records in order to publish his book, “Livingston Academy – A Football History”, which is a comprehensive look at LA football from its beginnings in 1915 until the book’s publication in 2011.
